The Friends of the Amazon has an Adopt a School Program that
provides school supplies to children that live in rural and native communities
in the Amazon Rainforest. To explain, schools are free, but school
supplies are not. Therefore, in order to attend school, the children need
to buy basic school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, paper, scissors,
rulers and erasers. Living in isolated villages with no income, humble families are not able to pay for these basic supplies. Friends of the Amazon
provides school supplies so that rural and native children can attend school.
The specific goals of the Friends of the Amazon Adopt a School
Program include:
1) Distributing essential school supplies for needy students and teaching
materials for teachers, including supplies for the classrooms, and books for the
libraries in the rural and native community.
2) Sponsoring teacher workshops in rural and indigenous community schools on
methods to increase bilingual reading and writing skills of native students.
3) Producing teacher's guides and booklets for activities in environmental education
instruction in rural and native schools.
Adopt an school in the Amazon! Support the Friends of the Amazon's Adopt a School Program. Education is free for
rural and native children, but pupils need to
purchase their own school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, paper,
scissors, rulers and erasers. Buying school supplies is a severe economic burden
for most rural and native families as the majority of people living in the
forest have no source of income.
