The
only way to stop deforestation in the Amazon is with laws and to file lawsuits
against those who ignore the law. This is exactly what Friends of the
Amazon is doing - filing lawsuits against "Carbon Cowboys" who are scammers that
seek to steal the forest from native communities in the guise of a REDD project.
The specific goals of the Friends of the Amazon Stop
Deforestation in the Amazon Program include:
1) Stop deforestation by filing criminal lawsuits against "Carbon Cowboys" who
are defrauding native and rural communities by tricking them into signing unjust
contracts in English that they do not understand by falsely promising these
vulnerable people "billions" of dollars in profits from carbon credits.
2) Advocate new legislation to stop deforestation in the Amazon and the abuses
of "Carbon Cowboys." You can help us by writing a letter to your
representatives in your government and the Peruvian government via our "Write
a Letter to End Deforestation in the Amazon" campaign.
3) Expand laws for Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) in Peru to include
private enterprises. Currently, FPIC laws in Peru only apply to the
government. The laws needs to be changed to include private companies and
NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), so that scammers and "Carbon Cowboys" can
be stopped from defrauding vulnerable indigenous Amazonians.
Stop deforestation in the Amazon! Support the Friends of the Amazon's
Stop Deforestation in the Amazon Program by working directly with us or by
writing a letter to governmental officials.
